Launched in April 2026, this exercise is not your standard annual update. Unlike the routine Special Summary Revisions (SSR) we see every year, the SIR is a deep-dive, “de-novo” preparation of the voter lists. In fact, for many parts of the state, including Mumbai, this is the first exercise of such intensity since 2002.

What is the SIR?

The Special Intensive Revision is a multi-stage process designed to “cleanse” the electoral rolls from the ground up. Over the years, voter lists can become cluttered with duplicate entries, names of deceased individuals, and “ghost” voters who have long since migrated to other cities or states.

The current exercise is particularly rigorous because it involves matching historical data (dating back to 2002) with the 2024 rolls. Using the Booth Level Officer (BLO) application, officials are conducting door-to-door mapping to ensure every entry corresponds to a real, residing individual.

Why This Matters Now

Maharashtra is currently in the “pre-revision” and enumeration phase. This is the critical window where the AASD list—representing those who are Absent, Shifted, or Dead—is being compiled.

For the average resident, the risk is simple: inadvertent deletion. If a BLO visits your home while you are away, or if there is a discrepancy in your mapping, you risk losing your right to vote in upcoming local and state elections.

Key Steps for Citizens:

The Election Commission of India (ECI) and the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) have called for maximum public cooperation. Here is how you can stay ahead of the curve:

  • Verify Your Entry: Don’t wait for the draft roll. Use the voters.eci.gov.in portal or the Voter Helpline App ECINET to check if your current details are mapped correctly. If you do not have a Voters ID before 2002, don’t worry. If your parents have one, that will do. They will map your Electoral ID EPIC number to your parents Voter ID and that is enough.
  • If you don’t yet have a Voter ID card, you can easily apply for the same online. Once you get it, you can link it with someone in your family who is already mapped. It is simple.
  • Keep Your Documents Ready: Ensure your Aadhaar is linked to your EPIC (Voter ID) to streamline the verification process.
  • Engage with your BLO: If an officer visits your housing society, cooperate with the data collection. Political parties are also appointing Booth Level Agents (BLAs) to oversee this—feel free to reach out to local representatives if you have concerns.
  • Watch the Schedule: The final electoral roll will be published after a “Claims and Objections” period. This will be your last chance to rectify errors before the list is frozen for the next election cycle.

The Bigger Picture

A clean electoral roll is the only way to prevent voter fraud and ensure that every legitimate voice is heard. Whether you are a first-time voter or a long-time resident, the SIR is a digital and physical “reset” for our democratic infrastructure.

In a bustling state like Maharashtra, where migration and urban development are constant, staying updated isn’t just a civic duty—it’s the only way to protect your vote. Verify today, so you can lead tomorrow.
