The way we count our nation is changing. For the first time in history, India is moving to a fully digital census, and for residents of Maharashtra, the journey begins soon. The Census 2027 House Listing Operation is introducing a “Self-Enumeration” (SE) feature, putting the power of data directly in your hands.

Here is your guide to being part of this historic nation-building effort.

What is Self-Enumeration?

Traditionally, census data is collected by an enumerator visiting your home and filling out forms. With Self-Enumeration, you can skip the wait. Using the official government portal, you can now securely log in and fill out your household’s details yourself.

Important Dates for Maharashtra (2026)

Mark your calendars! The process happens in two distinct phases:

  • Phase 1: Self-Enumeration (Online)
    • Portal Opens: May 1st, 2026
    • Portal Closes: May 15th, 2026
  • Phase 2: Door-to-Door Verification
    • Field Operations: May 16th – June 14th, 2026

How to Complete Your Self-Enumeration

The process is designed to be simple and should take about 15–20 minutes:

  1. Access the Portal: Visit the official website at se.census.gov.in.
  2. Authentication: Log in using your mobile number. You will receive a One-Time Password (OTP) to verify your identity.
  3. The Questionnaire: You will be asked 33 questions related to your housing conditions, household amenities (such as drinking water, electricity, and sanitation), and assets.
  4. The SE ID: Once you submit the form, a unique 11-digit Self-Enumeration ID (SE ID) will be sent to your registered mobile number via SMS.

What Happens Next?

Even if you self-enumerate, a census official (enumerator) will still visit your home between May 16th and June 14th. However, instead of a long interview, you simply provide them with your 11-digit SE ID. They will verify the data on their mobile device, and your participation is complete! Self Enumeration enables the Census to take place faster.

Stay Safe: Privacy and Verification

Your data is protected under the Census Act, but it is important to stay vigilant:

  • Check the URL: Ensure you are only using the official .gov.in domain.
  • No Personal Sensitive Data: The census will never ask for your bank details, passwords, or private OTPs for financial transactions.
  • Verify the Official: When an enumerator visits, feel free to ask for their official Government of India ID card.

Be a part of nation-building! By participating in the census, you help the government plan better infrastructure, schools, and healthcare for our future.
